God Came Close
Big Idea for the Night
Christianity doesn’t begin with people reaching for God.
It begins with God coming to us.
And what we believe about that shapes how close we’re willing to be with Him.
SECTION 1 — God Is Not Distant
Jesus existed before Christmas
Read Together
John 1:1–3 (NLT)
Teaching
John doesn’t start the Christmas story with a baby.
He starts it before time.
He calls Jesus “the Word,” meaning God expressing Himself.
Jesus isn’t a helper sent by God. He isn’t a created being. He isn’t a spiritual upgrade from the prophets. Jesus is God, existing before creation and active in creation.
That matters because Christianity isn’t about humans climbing up to God. It’s about God stepping into His own creation. If God made everything, then entering His creation isn’t a logic problem. It becomes a heart question. What kind of God would do that? John’s answer is clear. A God who wants to be known. A God who isn’t content to stay distant.
Discussion
When people picture God, why do you think “distant” is such a common idea?
Sample answer: God feels big, invisible, and hard to relate to. People assume power means distance. What’s the difference between believing God exists and believing God is near?
Sample answer: Existence is an idea. Nearness affects how you pray, trust, and live. Why do you think John starts with “In the beginning” instead of the manger?
Sample answer: To show Jesus didn’t start at Christmas and isn’t just a teacher or baby. How does it change things if Jesus is the Creator, not just a messenger?
Sample answer: It means He has authority, purpose, and full understanding of life. Why do people sometimes prefer a distant God over a close one?
Sample answer: Distance feels safer. A close God might challenge choices or expose things. If God wanted to stay far away, what would He not have done?
Sample answer: He wouldn’t have entered the world or revealed Himself in Jesus.
SECTION 2 — God Entered Real Life
Jesus didn’t pretend to be human
Read Together
John 1:14 (NLT)
Teaching
This is the sentence everything builds toward.
“The Word became human.”
Not appeared human.
Not visited humanity.
He became human.
Jesus didn’t just take on a body. He took on a human life. He grew. He learned. He got tired. He felt temptation, pressure, grief, and loneliness. He lived inside limits. And He didn’t stop being God while doing it.
John says Jesus “made His home among us.” That means He moved in. He didn’t keep space. There is no part of human life that feels unfamiliar to Him. Christianity doesn’t say God understands us from a distance. It says He understands us from the inside.
Discussion Questions
Why does it matter that Jesus became fully human instead of just appearing human?
Sample answer: Because real humanity needs real healing, not a performance. What parts of human life do you think people assume God wouldn’t understand?
Sample answer: Stress, temptation, loneliness, emotions, pressure to fit in.How does knowing Jesus experienced weakness change how you view your own weakness?
Sample answer: Weakness doesn’t disqualify you. It’s something Jesus understands. What does it mean that Jesus “made His home” among us instead of just visiting?
Sample answer: He stayed. He committed. He wasn’t detached. Why do people sometimes think God relates more to “perfect” people than real ones?
Sample answer: Because we assume holiness means distance from struggle. How is this different from the idea that religion is just about rules and behavior?
Sample answer: It’s about relationship, not performance.
SECTION 3 — God Shows Us What He’s Like
If you want to know God, look at Jesus
Read Together
Hebrews 1:1–3 (NLT)
Teaching
A lot of people say they like Jesus but aren’t sure about God.
The Bible doesn’t allow that separation.
Jesus doesn’t just talk about God. He shows us God.
He is the exact expression of God’s character. If you want to know what God is like, you don’t guess. You don’t start with fear. You don’t start with past experiences. You look at Jesus.
That means there isn’t a harsher version of God hiding behind Jesus. The compassion Jesus shows is God’s compassion. The patience Jesus shows is God’s patience. The authority Jesus carries is God’s authority. God came close so we wouldn’t have to wonder what He’s like.
Discussion Questions
Why do people sometimes trust Jesus more than God?
Sample answer: God can feel abstract or intimidating. Jesus feels relational. What do Jesus’ actions tell us about God’s attitude toward sinners and failures?
Sample answer: God moves toward people, not away from them.If Jesus shows us God clearly, what assumptions about God might need to change?
Sample answer: That God is always angry, disappointed, or distant. Why is it important that Jesus doesn’t just speak for God but is God?
Sample answer: It means we’re not missing anything about who God really is.How could a wrong picture of God affect someone’s faith long-term?
Sample answer: It leads to fear, distance, burnout, or pretending. What would it look like to trust Jesus as the clearest picture of God this week?
Sample answer: Being honest in prayer, reading the Gospels, not hiding.
